They usually take two cuts for each end - and thus are a bit of a challenge to get a smooth cut. So the cuts are not less. But, if you go that way, just glue or screw the 2x12 to the 4x4's, and so on. So you eliminate one layer of glue and screws/or nails. But for my money, I would rather use 2x4's (especially since I had some sitting around).
